The Minnesota Twins traded pitcher Vance Worley to the Pittsburgh Pirates for an undisclosed amount on Tuesday.
Worley, who was the Twins opening day starter last season, struggled during the season and those struggles continued in the spring. He finished 1-5 for the Twins with a 7.21 ERA before he was sent down to Rochester, last year.
According to the Star Tribune, Worley pitched in 10 2/3 innings in four appearances for the Twins this spring. He gave up 16 runs on 22 hits and five walks, including a performance on March 18 against Tampa Bay in which he was tagged for six doubles.
Worley was cut from camp and cleared waivers shortly after that. 1500 ESPN reports Worley had been removed from the 40-man roster and could have stayed at Triple A Rochester.
The report suggests despite a lack of top-end pitching in the organization, the Twins are fairly deep in Triple-A, and it’s possible they didn’t feel he’d pitch for the Red Wings and simply wanted to cut ties with Worley.
He was acquired in the deal that sent Ben Revere to Philadelphia. The Twins also received prospect Trevor May in that deal.
The announcement created quite the storm of reaction on Twitter, Tuesday afternoon.
