There may be no better way to bid farewell to a legendary Minneapolis bar (other than dropping in for a cocktail at least once before it closes some time this year) than a grand sendoff from the Minnesota Twins.
According to the Major League Baseball website, the team will hold a pre-game bash outside Target Field for the iconic Nye’s Polonaise Room on May 30 – when they play against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Discounted ticket prices, food and beer are the rewards for those who show up to say goodbye to the beloved dive bar.
However, the highlight of the festivities will undoubtedly be a concert by Nye’s polka band, which calls itself “The Most Dangerous Polka Band in the World.”
The group has long been a fixture at Nye’s, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reports.
Just last fall, Nye’s was named one of the “best no-frills bars in the country” by Thrillist.com. About nine years ago, Esquire named it the country’s best bar.
Sadly, the accolades weren’t enough to spare the classic watering hole from hard times – the owners announced late last year that Nye’s would close after years of financial struggle.
The bar opened in 1950 and while there’s no word on a specific closing date, the developer who bought the site has plans to build a mixed-use apartment facility.
