There have been many players who have stepped up for the Minnesota Twins this year and with that, there have been some crazy stories involving a team that has transformed into one of the best in baseball. However, no story may be crazier than the rise of Randy Dobnak.
The 24-year old’s path to Minnesota has been nothing but traditional as he was an undrafted pitcher that just two years ago was pitching for the independent Utica Unicorns. The Twins would sign him as a free agent and after starting the season with High-A Fort Myers, he skyrocketed through the system faster than anyone thought by making his major league debut in August.
The only problem is that his ascent was so quick, not even Dobnak expected it.
You see, Dobnak had plans to get married over the offseason. With his season starting in the lower levels of the Twins’ system, the right-hander thought that Sept. 28 would be a safe date for the wedding. Alas, life comes at you fast.
After making nine appearances for the Twins (including five starts), Dobnak has become such an important piece for Minnesota that they may ask him to start a game against the New York Yankees in the ALDS. With the regular season concluding in Kansas City this weekend, Dobnak and the Twins had to shuffle their schedules around to make sure he could walk down the aisle.
With that, the Twins handed Dobnak the ball on Sept. 25, where he provided a division-clinching performance against the Detroit Tigers. After a champagne-soaked celebration, Dobnak made the trip out to Maryland to make the final preparations and tie the knot with his fiancee, Aerial Munson.
According to his agency, Gaeta Sports Management, the wedding appeared to go off without a hitch, as the happy couple posed for a photo and then broke out the champagne goggles one more time to celebrate the occasion.
In all, there’s been more than a little bit of the bubbly in Dobnak’s life recently and if he can continue to pitch well, there could be more as part of a long postseason run.
