The Minnesota Twins scored six runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Yankees 7-2 in New York on Sunday afternoon, and take the series two games to one, according to MLB.com.
Ex-Yankee Phil Hughes (6-1), pitching against his former team for the first time since joining the Twins in the offseason, turned in eight strong innings and held New York to just two runs on three hits.
Despite Hughes’ impressive performance, Minnesota was down 2-1 heading into the ninth against Yankee closer David Robertson, but Josh Willingham hit a solo home run to tie the game on the first pitch of the inning, according to the Star Tribune.
Robertson walked two batters, setting up an RBI double from Brian Dozier with two outs. Eduardo Nunez followed with a two-run double off reliever Matt Daley, and Oswaldo Arcia added a two-run single.
The Twins play a home-and-home interleague series against the Milwaukee Brewers this week. They play two games in Milwaukee on Monday and Tuesday, then host the Brewers at Target Field on Wednesday and Thursday.
