The Minnesota Twins placed shortstop Carlos Correa and pitcher Chris Paddack on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, adding to the team’s growing list of injury concerns.
Correa missed last weekend’s series against the Oakland Athletics after bruising his right middle finger on May 5. Although Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports that Correa hasn’t suffered a setback, he will need a couple more days to heal.
With the Twins down several players due to injury and illness, they’ll need an extra man on the bench. That will sideline Correa for this week’s series against the Houston Astros but he should avoid a longer absence.
The news wasn’t as optimistic for Paddack. The right-hander left Sunday’s start against the A’s with right elbow inflammation and is reportedly seeking opinions on how to deal with the injury.
According to Hayes, surgery is on the table, which would be another blow to the Twins’ starting rotation.
Bailey Ober is already on the injured list with a groin strain and Dylan Bundy has been out since May 5 after testing positive for COVID-19. Although Sonny Gray returned from a hamstring injury last weekend, he only threw four innings in a win over Oakland on Saturday.
To take Correa and Paddack’s roster spots, the Twins have recalled outfielder Mark Contreras and pitcher Jharel Cotton from Triple-A St. Paul.
Despite the injuries, the Twins are 18-11 and lead the American League Central Division ahead of Tuesday’s opener against the Astros.
