The Twins found their next pitching coach.
Garvin Alston was named the Twins pitching coach on Thursday, making him the 16th pitching coach in team history and only the fourth since 1985.
Alston spent time with the Oakland Athletics and the San Diego Padres during the 2017 season. He was the bullpen coach with the Athletics, but began the season as the pitching rehab coordinator for the San Diego Padres.
The 45-year-old was also the Arizona Diamondbacks’ bullpen coach in 2016.
Alston spent one season in the major leagues as a pitcher but the 2018 season will mark his 14th as a coach in some capacity.
He’ll be tasked with improving a pitching staff that finished 19th in ERA in 2017 and 29th in strikeouts.
Minnesota let go of Neil Allen earlier this month after announcing the team had extended Paul Molitor’s contract.
