The Cedar Rapids Kernels and the Quad Cities River Bandits will have a catch at the historic Field of Dreams in Iowa this summer.
Major League Baseball announced Thursday that the minor league affiliates of the Twins (Cedar Rapids) and the Royals (Quad Cities) will play at the ballpark in the cornfields near Dyersville, Iowa – near the site where the Kevin Costner baseball movie was filmed and released in 1989 – on Aug. 9.
Cedar Rapids will become the Bunnies for the game. That was the club’s nickname from 1904-1932. Quad Cities will become the Davenport Blue Sox, which is a tribute to the team’s name from 1913-1916 and 1929-1937.
Both teams will wear throwback jerseys, just as the New York Yankees and Chicago WhiteSox did when they met in the inaugural MLB game at Field of Dreams last year.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to play in the first Minor League game at such an iconic venue,” said Cedar Rapids General Manager Scott Wilson, in a statement. “This will certainly be an incredible experience for our players, our organization and our great fans.”
Ticket information has not been announced.
The Kernels boast on of the Twins’ most exciting young prospects in 22-year-old Christian Encarnacion-Strand, who has obliterated the baseball early this season with 18 hits in 40 at-bats, including five home runs, two doubles and 21 RBIs.
Overall, Encarnacion-Strand is ranked No. 29 on MLB.com’s top 30 Twins prospects, though his start to this season might wind up boosting his ranking sooner than later.
