As the MLB and MLS seasons approach their starting points, four players for the Minnesota Twins and one for Minnesota United have tested positive for COVID-19.
It was reported on Friday that two Twins arrived at training camp at Target Field on Friday and tested positive for the virus.
One of them is Willians Astudillo, who is asymptomatic but will need to test negative twice before he can return to camp, according to the Pioneer Press.
The other, it emerged on Saturday, is Miguel Sano, who will also require two negative tests before returning.
Two other Twins, Edward Colina and Nick Gordon, tested positive prior to camp and are also quarantining.
A shortened baseball season is set to resume in late July. MLB announced Friday that out of 3,185 players and staff tested during the intake process, 38 were positive. Of these, 31 were players and 7 were staff.
Furthermore, it was reported Friday that a Minnesota United player has tested positive for COVID-19 despite having been in the MLS “bubble” in Florida since June 28.
Reporter Jeff Reuter, of The Athletic, confirmed that a player has tested positive, and that all players will be tested again to confirm it was accurate.
There have been growing concerns about COVID-19 ahead of the MLS is Back tournament that starts Wednesday, with 6 players for Dallas FC having tested positive earlier this week.
MLS players are at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World, with no players, referees, or club staff allowed to exit “the bubble” without authorization, and anyone who attempts to reenter will be subject to 10 days of quarantine and “enhanced testing.”
