Byron Buxton hit a grand slam and drove in five runs and C.J. Cron homered twice as the Twins (30-15) beat down the Mariners 18-4 Saturday night in Seattle.
By the end of three innings the Twins were up 10-0 and had already slugged five homers:
- 2nd inning: C.J. Cron solo homer
- 2nd inning: Byron Buxton grand slam
- 3rd inning: C.J. Cron solo homer
- 3rd inning: Miguel Sano solo homer
- 3rd inning: Jonathan Schoop 3-run homer
Schoop’s second homer of the night – a two-run shot in the sixth inning – was the sixth and final long ball in the 18-run outburst.
“Very, very special night for our offense,” manager Rocco Baldelli said, via the Twins. “Up and down the lineup, obviously we hit some homers again, stating the obvious here, but I haven’t seen too many nights like that. Just a very special night.”
The Twins are on pace to hit 313 homers, which would shatter the team record of 225 set in 1963.
Also stunning is that Minnesota is now 15 games over .500 for the first time since the 2010 season, and their lead in the AL Central is now 5 1/2 games over the second place Cleveland Indians.
The Twins go for the four-game series sweep on Sunday. Through the first three games in Seattle, Minnesota has outscored the Mariners 36-11.
First pitch is set for 3:10 p.m.
