The Twins made a few roster moves before their three-game series with the Boston Red Sox opened on Friday.
First, they designated utility player Danny Santana for assignment, meaning he was taken off the 40 man roster. That means the team will have 10 days to either send him through waivers, trade him or cut him.
If Santana clears waivers, the team can send him to the minor leagues. After hitting .319 in 2014, Santana hit just .225 over parts of the last three seasons.
With Santana DFA’d, the Twins activated Ehire Adrianza off the 10-day disabled list. Adrianza is a slick fielder who spent the past four years with the San Francisco Giants.
He plays three infield positions and has made just four errors throughout his major-league career.
The final move was adding reliever Drew Ruchinski to Minnesota’s bullpen. Ruchinski takes the roster spot left open when starting pitcher Kyle Gibson was sent down to the minors on Thursday.
Ruchinski has made six appearances at Triple-A Rochester this season and has allowed just four earned runs in 10.1 innings while striking out 13 batters.
