Kevin Correia probably has never been called a staff ace before, but that’s exactly what he’s become with the Twins.
“We’re kind of watching it happen right in front of our eyes,” Ron Gardenhire tells the Pioneer Press. “He’s just in command of the strike zone, and we’re watching it unfold.”
Correia’s start has been unexpected. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 2.23 earned run average. He’s also thrown a team-high 36 1/3 innings — the most among American League pitchers with five or fewer starts.
Baseball Outsiders describes Correia as a “disposable veteran.” Even with such a unflattering tag, the web site gives him an A for his start to the season.
Correia’s next start comes Saturday against the Cleveland Indians.
