Twins catcher Josmil Pinto will sit out for at least four or five days after sustaining some hits to his helmet in Saturday’s game against the Orioles.
The Twins aren’t officially calling it a concussion though, saying Pinto is experiencing “concussion-like symptoms,” according to the Pioneer Press.
Pinto left the game Saturday after Baltimore batter Adam Jones hit him three times on the follow-through of his swing, the Pioneer Press reports.
All three swings came during the Orioles’ four-run second inning, with the last one striking Pinto on the top of his helmet.
The Star Tribune said the first two were “grazing blows.” But the third hit was described by Twins manager Paul Molitor as “particularly direct.”
Pinto is reporting dizziness and headaches, but a CT scan was negative. The Star Tribune reports general manager Terry Ryan says they’ll wait a few days to see how Pinto is feeling.
Both reports note the setback, coupled with a quad injury Pinto suffered earlier during spring training, could jeopardize his chances of making the Opening Day roster.
However Molitor would not speculate on that, the Pioneer Press notes.
The Twins beat the Marlins Sunday 5-3.
