Pedro Hernandez started Wednesday night’s Twins-Red Sox game with a heavy heart and a lot on his mind.
His cousin, Maira Camacho, 38, was killed in a car accident in Venezuela Monday. The 38-year-old left behind two daughters, ages 14 and 4.
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire tells the Pioneer Press that Hernandez was given the option to go on the bereavement list and fly to Venezuela for the funeral, but he wanted to “go about his business” and make his next start.
His start against Boston did not go well. Hernandez allowed six runs and was pulled after two innings, later admitting that he had a hard time focusing.
Gardenhire says he expects Hernandez to make his next scheduled start.
