We’re not saying this will happen soon, but the Star Tribune’s Patrick Reusse is.
The Twins are on pace for 94 losses, and there is some interesting history that has to be looked at when addressing manager Ron Gardenhire’s future.
This would be Gardy’s third 90-loss season in a row, and as Aaron Gleeman has pointed out in the story above, it isn’t often that a manager survives three of those in a row, although former Twins manager Tom Kelly was one of them.
Rumors, and we use the term very loosely in this case, have been swirling around former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen coming in to replace Gardy, who’s been leading the Twins for 12 years now. Maybe the word “rumors” should’ve been replaced with “delusional dreamers have been quoted as saying.”
Before this recent run of bad play, some thought the Twins skipper was already safe.
That being said, being 14 games under .500 and nearly exactly where you were last year can’t help. Gardenhire’s contract is up at the end of this season. Are the Twins willing to invest more years in a man that hasn’t been able to get wins and has only won a single playoff series (6-21 in the playoffs overall)?
