In a surprise move following Thursday’s 3-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers, the Minnesota Twins demoted third baseman Miguel Sano to Class A Fort Myers.
“I’m not mad,” Sano said after learning of his demotion, via TwinsBaseball.com. “I’m happy, because I know I’m struggling, and [manager Paul Molitor] gave me an opportunity. There’s no reason I can get mad.”
Sano, who didn’t get to train during winter because of a surgically repaired lower leg, is batting .203 with seven homers and 27 RBI. He also missed more than 20 games in May because a hamstring strain.
Sano is hitting just .167 in June.
Jake Cave was also optioned to Triple-A Rochester.
Joe Mauer is expected to join the Twins in Cleveland on Friday.
