The Minnesota Twins declined their 2021 option on reliever Sergio Romo on Wednesday night. The move saves the Twins $5 million on next year’s payroll and begins a potential overhaul in their bullpen for next season.
Romo was acquired in July of 2019 as the Twins tried to build their bullpen on the fly in the middle of a pennant race. The right-hander was solid in their push to the AL Central crown, compiling a 3.18 ERA in 22 2/3 innings.
In 2020, Romo got off to a strong start but faltered down the stretch with a 6.52 ERA in his final 13 games. With Romo entering his age-39 season, the Twins decided to move on.
Entering this offseason, the Twins will look to add upgrades to a bullpen that stumbled after a solid end to 2019. With Taylor Rogers struggling, the Twins may look to add an arm or two in free agency or via trade.
