The Twins salvaged the last of their four-game series with the Angels with an 8-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Target Field, and are tied with the Angels in the chase for a wild-card playoff spot.
Rookie righthander Tyler Duffey pitched seven shutout innings for the Twins, giving up only three hits and one walk, according to the Star Tribune.
It was a nice turnaround after Minnesota lost five straight, including a doubleheader Saturday and the series opener on Thursday.
The Twins scored off homers by Torii Hunter, Eddie Rosario and Joe Mauer, and brought in two more runs on two consecutive bases-loaded walks in the fifth inning, MLB.com notes.
The Angels scored their only run in the ninth inning when Jett Bandy hit a solo homer off Glen Perkins.
With the win, Minnesota and LA are tied, 2 1/2 games behind Houston for the final AL wild card spot. The Twins host Cleveland for a three-game series beginning on Tuesday, and the Indians are just 1 1/2 games back in the wild card chase with just two weeks left in the regular season.
