A rocket of a home run by Logan Morrison in the first inning and and a tank shot off the bat of Jake Cave in the sixth inning led the Twins to a 7-5 win over the visiting Angels at Target Field Sunday afternoon.
Morrison launched his homer – his seventh of the season – on a line into the right-field stands to gives the Twins a 2-1 lead in the first inning.
His home run was key considering rookie pitcher Fernando Romero got off to a rocky start in the first inning before settling in for five innings and his third win of the season while lowering his ERA to 3.92.
Minnesota added insurance runs later in the game, highlighted by Cave’s 418-foot homer to center field in the fifth. Cave went 3-for-4 on the day with three RBI, and it’s the second time this season he’s homered in the first game after being called up.
Cave got the call from Triple-A Rochester on Saturday in a move that also saw relief pitcher Tyler Duffey optioned to the minors.
Stat of the day 1: the Twins are 26-13 this season when scoring four or more runs, according to Rhett Bollinger of TwinsBaseball.com.
Stat of the day 2: Eduardo Escobar doubled twice to increase his MLB-leading total to 26 on the season.
It’s a big week ahead for Minnesota with three games in Detroit Tuesday-Thursday followed by three in Cleveland Friday-Sunday.
