A stunning 9th inning comeback from the Twins was all for nought as the Cleveland Indians hit a grand slam in the 10th, securing a 3-1 series win.
The AL Central rivals now have identical records after the Twins’ losing homestand thanks to Carlos Santana’s grand slam off of Taylor Rogers.
It could have been so different just an innings earlier. Twins were 3-1 down in the 9th and facing ace Indians closer Brad Hand, who was bidding for the save.
But a double from Eddie Rosario and a single from Luis Arraez halved the deficit, before a single from CJ Cron and a double from Marwin Gonzalez tied things up.
Ehire Adrianza, running for Cron, was out at home on Gonzalez’s double, an inexplicable call for the 2nd night in a row from 3rd base coach Tony Diaz, who sent Adrianza when he had no chance of making it.
Had he not been sent, the Twins would have had runners at 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out, meaning Jonathan Schoop would have only needed a sac-fly to clinch the victory.
Jose Berrios had a rocky beginning at the plate, giving up three runs over the first three innings before improving, locking things down enough to get a quality start.
The Twins now go on the road for a 2-game series in Milwaukee, while the Indians host the Red Sox.
