Ex-Gophers basketball coach Tubby Smith was introduced today as the new head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Smith, who was released from his coaching duties at the University of Minnesota last week, told reporters that he was sold “right away” on coming to Lubbock.
“The enthusiasm and the passion which your leadership shows is just off the charts,” Smith said in an afternoon news conference. “One thing that impressed us was the facilities, and you have some of the best here.”
Smith also said he looked forward to building the program into one of the best in the country, but admitted “it’s not going to be easy.”
Last season, the Red Raiders posted a 3-15 record in the Big 12 conference, and were 11-21 overall.
Smith also addressed his six seasons at Williams Arena.
“Our tenure at Minnesota was one that we were very proud of ,” he said. “It was tough to leave … but life goes on. We leave some good friends behind, but we know that we’re inheriting even more.”
