Trevor May’s season officially ended Sept. 13 but the Twins’ right-hander was apparently pitching for at least part of the season with a stress fracture in his back.
According to Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press, May was diagnosed with the fracture on Monday. The doctor told May that the fracture had been there for a while.
“I probably had just gone through cycles of healing without addressing the causes of it,” May explained to Berardino. “I just kept pitching on it and probably shouldn’t have. It was an injury that was a little more serious than I thought it was.”
Rest is all May has to do to let the injury heal and he’s expected to be ready to pitch again before the start of the 2017 season.
May was acquired by the Twins in the trade that sent outfielder Ben Revere to the Philadelphia Phillies. He began his career with the Twins as a starter before transitioning to the bullpen, but Twins interim general manager Rob Antony hopes May can break camp next spring as one of Minnesota’s five starting pitchers.
