Malik Smith, the senior guard who transferred to Minnesota from Florida International, has received an NCAA waiver to play for the Gophers this year.
According to the Pioneer Press, Smith didn’t have to sit out a year because FIU was hit with a postseason ban for poor academics.
Smith followed coach Richard Pitino from FIU.
In a statement, Pitino said he “excited” by the news.
“He is a great addition to the roster given his skills and invaluable knowledge of how we run our program,” Pitino said.
Smith averaged 14 points per game last season.
