Glen Perkins hopes he will be back with the Twins sooner than later, and signs are pointing toward that becoming a reality.
He hasn’t pitched in a big league game in over 13 months. He has spent the majority of that time rehabbing from labrum surgery during the 2016 season.
Perkins has had some recent break-throughs and milestones during his comeback attempt. He pitched a scoreless inning just a few weeks ago in his first live action post-surgery.
This week, Perkins will head south to Double-A Chattanooga for three pre-planned pitching appearances. Perkins says “there is no reason” he shouldn’t be able to rejoin the big league club if his stint in Double-A goes smoothly.
Hypothetically if he makes it up to the big leagues before the season comes to an end, the Twins do have a slight vacancy at the position that made him an all-star before his injuries. They traded away closer Brandon Kintzler on deadline day this season.
Twins fans will have to wait and see if Glen has enough gas left in his tank to earn back the closer role.
