According to BaseballReference.com, 12,337 paying customers saw Harmon Killebrew mash a ball into the left field seats at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington on this day in 1967.
Well, make that upper deck left field seats, a mere 522-feet away from home plate — making it the longest home run ever hit by a Twin.
Eventually, the seat was painted orange to mark the feat. When the Mall of America was built on the Met Stadium site, Killebrew’s clout was not forgotten. Builders attached a seat to the wall inside the mall’s indoor amusement park — at approximately the same spot where the ball landed.
Another approximation: Slugger Jim Thome, the most Killebrew-like hitter ever to put on a Twins uniform, marked a similar spot at Target Field two summers ago during Harmon’s memorial service:
