No joke. There’s a guy slowly but surely scattering his friend’s ashes – by way of toilets –at ballparks across the country.
Tom McDonald’s friend, Roy Riegel, died nine years ago, according to The Wall Street Journal, and he’s been tabbed with the job of disposing of his ashes.
Riegel was a plumber who loved baseball, so his buddy, McDonald, figured he’d flush his friend down the toilet. But there are rules. The game has to be in progress and he can’t pee in the urinal before flushing.
And yes, he has been to Minnesota with his buddy’s cremains. More on that trip from the WSJ.
“But scattering the ashes at some stadiums posed problems. Mr. McDonald’s first attempt, at a Pittsburgh Pirates game in 2009 at PNC Park, was met with a gust of wind, recalled Adam Boneker, 46, a friend who has accompanied Mr. McDonald on many of his trips to ballparks to dump the ashes.
‘It was awkward,’ Mr. Boneker recalled, adding that they resolved to try it at a Minnesota Twins game at the Metrodome in Minneapolis but, once there, realized that an indoor stadium was not an appropriate setting.”
The article doesn’t say if McDonald disposed of his friend in the Metrodome troughs. Nor does it say if he’s been to Target Field.
In all, he’s given his buddy a ceremonial swirly at 16 ballparks.
