The Wild are right up against the salary cap, but they handed out a professional tryout offer to Ryan Malone for training camp next month.
Malone, 37, is a former five-time 20 goal goal scorer, but has played in just six games since 2015. He last played with the New York Rangers.
He’ll most likely get a good luck in training camp at making the Wild’s roster.
Michael Russo of the Star Tribune notes that he could even land an AHL deal, if he doesn’t make the NHL roster.
The native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is familiar with the State of Hockey, having played collegiately at St. Cloud State University from 1999-03.
After six solid years with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Malone was bought out of his contract in 2014.
Malone’s veteran presence could do wonders in the Wild’s locker room. The left wing has played in 43 playoff games in his career, making it to the Stanley Cup Finals with the Penguins in 2008.
He scored a career high 27 goals that season and averaged 21 goals from 2003-2012.
