With Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer headed to the Twin Cities Tuesday for his second interview with the Vikings, plenty of reports are out there regarding the viability of Zimmer as a coach and where Minnesota is in the search.
One tidbit says the Purple are winding down the hunt for their new head man, with another saying Zimmer may not leave town without securing the job.
Those that have been alongside Zimmer in the past threw their support behind the longtime defensive coordinator Monday, with former bosses Mike Price and Barry Switzer seeming to agree that they are clueless as to why Zimmer hasn’t been snatched up by a NFL team yet.
Said Price, who was Zimmer’s boss when he was the defensive coordinator at Washington State: “I can’t believe he’s still available. “I thought he would have been a head coach a long time ago. Maybe it’s because he’s honest and blunt and tells the truth. He’s real. He’s not a phony. He’s very well respected in the profession, and he’s really a players’ coach.”
Many have jumped on the report that Zimmer is the favorite to land the job, and there will surely be more reports coming as the interview nears tomorrow.
For now, what we know is that he will be in town and is the only candidate to interview more than once.
We’re pretty sure we can conclude, without talking to anyone about the job, that those two facts make him the favorite.
In other coaching news, Ken Whisenhunt spurned the Lions today, as he agreed to become the new head coach of the Titans. Minnesota was never involved in conversations to acquire Whisenhunt.
