Nathan was signed to a minor-league contract in May and didn’t even allow a run in three appearances for the Cubs this season. The 41-year-old Nathan was rehabbing from what was feared to be career-ending Tommy John surgery in 2015.
He holds the Twins’ franchise record for career saves, closing out 377 games. It’s unclear whether Nathan will accept his demotion to the minors or opt for free agency/retirement.
