The Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year will no longer be named after a former Olympic track star who last year admitted she also worked as a prostitute.
The award was named after Suzy Favor Hamilton, a former University of Wisconsin athlete. Today, a Big Ten spokesman announced Favor Hamilton’s name has been removed from award after discussions between the league and Wisconsin.
The most recent award went to Gopher hockey standout Amanda Kessel after she led the University of Minnesota to an undefeated season and another NCAA title.
In a series of tweets last year, Favor Hamilton indicated that her work as an escort provided an “escape” for her as she continued to battle issues of depression linked back to her childhood.
