Former Pro Bowl tight end Steve Jordan will be inducted into the Minnesota Vikings’ Ring of Honor, the team announced Wednesday morning.
The Vikings surprised Jordan with the announcement during a team meeting Wednesday morning, with COO Kevin Warren, who was hired last week to be commissioner of the Big Ten, delivering the message.
“He has been an iconic player here who had an unbelievable career … but bigger than that, he has an Ivy League degree, graduated in four years,” Warren said, according to Vikings.com. “He is a phenomenal human being. People didn’t give him a chance. Today is a special day, and I love days like this, so on behalf of the Wilf family, the Minnesota Vikings and all of our fans around the world, I just want to invite Steve Jordan to the Ring of Honor, and you all are the first to know.”
The ceremony will be held at halftime of Minnesota’s Thursday Night Football game against the Washington Redskins on Oct. 24.
In 13 seasons with the Vikings (1982-1994), Jordan pulled in 498 catches for 6,307 yards and 28 touchdowns. He’s third in Vikings history in receptions, trailing only Cris Carter (1,004) and Randy Moss (587).
His success led to six straight Pro Bowl selections from 1986 to 1991. Only Randall McDaniel (11,) Carter (8), Ron Yary (7) and Adrian Peterson (7) have been selected to more Pro Bowl teams.
As the schedule would have it, Peterson will be in Minnesota as a member of the Redskins the night Jordan enters the Ring of Honor.
Current members of the Ring of Honor include: Fran Tarkenton, Alan Page, Jim Finks, Bud Grant, Paul Krause, Fred Zamberletti, Jim Marshall, Ron Yary, Korey Stringer, Mick Tingelhoff, Carl Eller, Cris Carter, Bill Brown, Jerry Burns, Randall McDaniel, Chuck Foreman, John Randle, Scott Studwell, Chris Doleman, Matt Blair, Joey Browner, Ahmad Rashad, Randy Moss and Dennis Green.
Jordan’s son, Cameron Jordan, is a four-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman for the New Orleans Saints. Earlier this week he agreed to a three-year, $52 million contract extension with the Saints.
