A big in-state recruit from a small town in southwestern Minnesota announced over the weekend that he has committed to play football at the University of Minnesota.
Tony Nelson, a 6-foot-67, 270-pound offensive lineman from Tracy-Milroy-Balaton High School tweeted: ““Extremely excited to say that I have verbally committed to the U of M!!”

247Sports rates Nelson as a three-star recruit and the No. 2 player in Minnesota’s senior Class of 2022.
Nelson’s high school coach told Gophers Illustrated that Nelson would benefit if he unleashed his mean streak on the field more often.
“Tony might also benefit from working on his mean streak a bit. It’s there, but Tony’s the type of kid that doesn’t let that attribute shine through all of the time. Believe me, when he wants to knock someone over and even gets fired up about it, it’s there, but he might need to let that come out a little bit more as he progresses into his last year of high school football into playing at the D1 level. Those guys aren’t going to be nice…ever. Their goal is going to be to knock down each and every play…so if he can let that side of him permeate his attitude on the field a little bit more, it might benefit him not only in the future, but while he’s still in high school.”
Nelson is the second in-state recruit to commit tot he Gophers’ 2022 class, joining wide receiver Kristen Hoskins, of Alexandria.
According to his Twitter profile, Nelson can squat more than 400 pounds and can bench-press 300 pounds. He also plays basketball and participates in track & field.
