The Minnesota Vikings have announced they have re-signed cornerback and punt returner Marcus Sherels.
Sherels has appeared in 49 games with the Vikings, including all 16 in 2013. He set the Vikings single-season record with a punt return average of 15.2 yards per return, ranking him 2nd in the NFL.

Sherels, a Rochester native and former Golden Gopher, returned a punt 86 yards for a touchdown against the New York Giants last season. It was his second as a Viking and tied him for the most punt return touchdowns in team history with two.
He was also asked to fill in on defense with the team’s defensive struggles during the season. He made four starts in the defensive backfield and intercepted his first career pass against Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco on Dec. 8.
After walking on at the University of Minnesota, Sherels joined the Vikings as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2010.
It was also a big day for his brother Mike Sherels. 1500 ESPN reports Gopher Coach Jerry Kill officially promoted Mike, who will become the Gophers new linebackers coach.
Mike Sherels will replace Bill Miller, who left to join the Florida State staff.
