“Dysfunctional Vikings clearly the least attractive coaching opening”
How’s that for a straight to the point gut-shot in the headline for an article by Michael Rosenberg of Sports Illustrated?
Rosenberg takes aim at the Vikings by pinpointing just how poorly run he thinks the organization is.
He refers to team owners Zygi and Mark Wilf as owners who “act like owners when it strikes their fancy.”
He pads his argument by saying the Wilfs haven’t given General Manager Rick Spielman full control to hire a head coach to his liking, and they “don’t pay enough attention” to the players, the coaches and the fans.
The failed Christian Ponder franchise quarterback project doesn’t help the Vikings’ chances to turning this season’s 5-10-1 record around quickly.
“I don’t know exactly what their recruiting pitch is, but I assume it involves 73 different pictures of Adrian Peterson’s muscles,” Rosenberg wrote. “The Vikings do not have any other Pro Bowlers. They have no quarterback. They will play outside in a college stadium for the next two years — in Minnesota, where the average temperature in December is negative-72 degrees. Good luck recruiting free agents.”
The bottom line, according to the column, is that Minnesota won’t be in better shape unless the Wilfs become more pro-active owners.
For the record, Spielman told KFAN-FM 100.3 on Tuesday that finding a replacement for Leslie Frazier, who was fired on Monday, will be his first chance to lead the process of hiring a head coach. (Listen at the 9:08 mark of the player)
