Scott Diamond was the ace of the Twins pitching staff in 2012, compiling a 12-9 record with a 3.54 ERA.
But in 2013, Diamond can’t get on track — and it might be time to send him to Triple A Rochester.
The latest poor outing came Sunday against Cleveland at Target Field.
Diamond (5-9) gave up five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. His ERA is now at 5.53, and he hasn’t had won since June 20.
Another telling stat: Last year, over 173 innings, Diamond gave up 17 home runs and 31 walks. This year, in just 96 innings, he’s allowed 16 home runs and 27 walks.
Does Diamond need to head to the farm to regroup?
“I know I’m not pitching well, so anything is possible,” he told the Pioneer Press.
Pitching coach Rick Anderson tells the Star Tribune it’s primarily a matter of consistency: “He’ll throw a good curveball, then he’ll try to throw one that’s even better, and it will just spin up there. He needs to get back to throwing strikes early in the count.”
