The Minnesota Twins used a pair of early home runs and a strong start by Matt Shoemaker to earn a 7-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.
The Twins got off to a fast start thanks to a leadoff home run by Kyle Garlick. Garlick’s bomb was his first of the season and the second straight leadoff home run for the Twins to put Minnesota up 1-0.

Matt Shoemaker threw five shutout innings but the Twins ran into trouble once they turned to their bullpen. Cody Stashak allowed a three-run homer to Willie Castro to make it a 4-3 game but things got soggy with a pair of rain delays.
Once the weather cleared up, the Twins went to work getting an RBI double from Polanco in the seventh and Max Kepler’s second home run of the season in the eighth inning.

A Miguel SanĂł RBI single added an insurance run in the ninth and the Twins bullpen tamed the Tigers to secure the victory.
The Twins (12-19) will play the second game of their series with the Tigers on Saturday at 3:10 p.m.
