Hector Santiago will start on the mound for the Twins against the Texas Rangers Wednesday, but he’ll be pitching with a heavy heart.
He announced on his Instagram his grandmother died, writing: “You will be missed but you are in a better place he wanted his angel by his side. Always so happy and smiling!”
Mike Beradino of the Pioneer Press reports Santiago will leave the team after Wednesday’s game and will be placed on the team’s bereavement list for the upcoming weekend series in Kansas City.
The Twins will most likely be recalling a pitcher from the minors in place of Santiago.
Santiago has been rock solid on the mound owning an ERA of 2.19, while striking out 17 batters in 24 innings this season.
First pitch from Arlington, Texas, is set for 7:05 p.m.
