The roster shake-up continues as the Twins announced a series of moves Friday, including activating starting pitcher Ervin Santana from the 15-day disabled list (back strain). They also selected the contracts of outfielder Darin Mastroianni and catcher Juan Centeno and they’ll join the team in Chicago.
Santana will start Saturday against the White Sox.
Centeno, making the jump from Triple-A Rochester where he was hitting .245, takes the roster spot of catcher John Ryan Murphy, whose Twins career (after being traded from the Yankees for Aaron Hicks) began with 3 hits in 40 at-bats. Murphy was optioned to Triple-A Rochester.
Mastroianni was hitting .208 in 24 games at Rochester.
J.R. Graham and Ryan O’Rourke were designated for assignment or release.
The series of moves isn’t a shock considering general manager Terry Ryan announced Thursday that difficult decisions needed to be made in an effort to bust out of an 8-20 start to the season.
These moves come less than 24 hours after the Pioneer Press reported that pitchers Tommy Milone and Casey Fien were being waived, so there could be more roster moves on the way – but those might not come until the Twins find out if Milone and Fien clear waivers. They’ll know that on Saturday, according to Berardino.
