San Jose State won’t be a walk in the park for the Gophers on Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium. In fact, the Gophers are only favored by four points.
The Spartans won 11 games in 2012, and they still have the quarterback that led them to all 11 wins.
David Fales is his name and completing passes is his game. Fales led the nation with a 72.5-percent completion rate last season, and he has a chance be taken in the first-round of next year’s NFL Draft.
“We’ll have to step our game up,” Gophers coach Jerry Kill told the Pioneer Press. “It’s pretty much similar going into the Big Ten schedule. This is a game that’s really good for us because we’re going to play a quarterback who most people come through here from the NFL feel like is going to be a first-round draft pick. He throws the back-shoulder throw as good as anybody in the country.”
Fales threw for nearly 4,200 yards and 33 touchdowns last season.
While Fales is orchestrating the Spartans’ offense, it’s likely that redshirt freshman Mitch Leidner will be leading the Gophers. That’s a matchup that doesn’t favor Minnesota.
Note worth knowing: Fales, at one time, was the backup quarterback to Colin Kaepernick at Nevada. Kaepernick is now the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers.
