An update on general manager Terry Ryan was released by the Minnesota Twins Tuesday night, the statement saying Ryan has undergone surgery to remove cancerous cells after revealing he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma Monday during a routine physical.
The procedure was done at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, where he is expected to remain for “a few nights”, the statement said.
Ryan said Monday that a lump in his neck was found by a team doctor during his annual physical, but the cancer is thought of as treatable and should everything go smoothly, he remains “optimistic” about making a full recovery.
Ryan will not travel with the team to spring training in Fort Myers, which begins with pitchers and catchers reporting Sunday, but he hopes to return to the ballpark in the near future.
