There’s a new layer to the Ricky Rubio trade rumors to speculate about. Legion Hoops reports that Minnesota, Detroit and New York are involved discussions that could send Rubio to Detroit, point guard Reggie Jackson to the Knicks and Derrick Rose to the Timberwolves.
ESPN first reported the Knicks-Wolves discussions involving Rose late Monday night.
“One of the most likely players to get traded between now and Thursday afternoon is Ricky Rubio,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said Monday. “That’s what the Knicks have been talking to the Wolves about – a Ricky Rubio for Derrick Rose swap. But it’s not just the Knicks here.
If a trade does go down, Windhorst says the Wolves don’t want Jackson and they don’t consider Rose their future point guard.
“It’s not because the Timberwolves see Derrick Rose as their point guard of the future. It’s because they want to clear space for Kris Dunn going forward. Tom Thibodeau loves Kris Dunn, even though he hasn’t had the greatest rookie season. They want to get off Rubio’s contract, so that may affect who they want to trade for, but Derrick Rose is an option.”
Rose has an expiring contract, meaning Minnesota trading for Rose is basically a simple elimination of the two years and nearly $29 million remaining on Rubio’s contract.
