The Royals scored three times in the bottom of the eighth and defeated the Twins, 3-1 Monday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.
Kansas City’s home opener was nearly spoiled by Kevin Corriea, who held the Royals scoreless through seven innings before getting touched up for three runs in the eighth. Despite taking the loss, Correia lowered his ERA to 3.14.
As good as Correia was for the Twins, Ervin Santana was just a little bit better for Kansas City. The former Angels starter gave up a run in the first before cruising through eight strong innings with eight strikeouts.
Ryan Doumit drove in the lone run for the Twins with an RBI single that scored Joe Mauer.
Mauer and Chris Parmelee led the Twins with two hits each. Aaron Hicks continued to struggled. He went 0-4 with two strikeouts, lowering his batting average to a microscopic .067.
