The Minnesota Vikings have released veteran kicker Kai Forbath.
Forbath’s release means the job has been won by rookie fifth-round pick Daniel Carlson.
Forbath didn’t get any kicking attempts in Minnesota’s preseason win over the Broncos, but he did in Saturday’s preseason loss to the Jaguars. He made his only extra point attempt and went 1-for-2 on field goals, making a 44-yard kick and missing a 41-yard try that he clanked off the right upright.
Carlson was fantastic against the Broncos, hitting all four of his extra points and drilling two field goals, including one from 57 yards out.

Forbath came through in the clutch with a go-ahead field goal late in Minnesota’s miracle win in the playoffs against the Saints last season, but overall he missed 11 kicks, including five extra points.
But he was solid from 50+ yards, hitting on 7-of-10 from that distance since signing with the Vikings following the release of Blair Walsh late in the 2016 season.
