It sounds like Zach Parise might on the operating table this week.
According to Michael Russo of The Athletic and KSTP’s Joe Schmit, Parise is contemplating back surgery. Russo notes it’s not an “non-invasive” form of surgery, but it would sideline for him about two months.
The Minnesota native missed the 2016 playoffs because of a herniated disc in his back. However, he played in 70 games last season, did not miss time due his back, and was able to play in that postseason.
Timeline of injury
Shortly before training camp opened, Parise felt a tweak in his back but was still able to practice with the team. He sat out all three preseason games in hopes that the injury would fade away by the time the regular season opened.
Obviously that didn’t happen and on Monday, Oct. 16, the Wild announced Parise had a setback during practice, where he left the ice and has yet to appear in a practice since.
What will the Wild do without him?
If Parise is out for the next two months, other players must step up. Veteran Chris Stewart has picked up that slack – out of nowhere – and leads the team with 6 goals so far.
It’s also imperative that the team gets Mikael Granlund back in the lineup. From what it sounds like, he should be able to return this week.
Minnesota opens a six-game home stand on Tuesday against the Vancouver Canucks.
