The Timberwolves’ search for a new head coach may already be entering its final stages.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, there is a “growing expectation” that the Wolves will decide between Tom Thibodeau and Jeff Van Gundy. Windhorst reports that Wolves owner Glen Taylor interviewed Thibodeau over the weekend and he’ll interview Van Gundy on Monday.
“The growing expectation in coaching circles is that the Wolves will choose either Van Gundy or Thibodeau to take over the team as coach/team president, with the ability to bring in a seasoned front-office executive to assist with day-to-day operations.”
Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical says Minnesota is expected to “move quickly in making an offer” to one of the two. The report adds that other teams would like to hire Thibodeau, but the Wolves are the only team willing to allow full control as coach and president.
Van Gundy last coached the Houston Rockets in 2007 and has spent the last handful of years as an analyst for ESPN. Thibodeau, a former assistant on the inaugural Wolves team in 1989-90, spent 2010-2015 as head coach of the Chicago Bulls, who went 255-139 under him.
The Wolves relieved Sam Mitchell of his coaching duties following the team’s final game last Wednesday.
