Derrick Rose could be a free-agent target for the Timberwolves this summer, according to ESPN.
ESPN’s Ian Begley doesn’t go deeper than saying he’s a “potential” target, but it makes some sense considering the Wolves and Knicks were reportedly discussing a trade last season that would have brought Rose to Minnesota for Ricky Rubio.
Rubio is still under contract with the Wolves for two more years along with point guards Kris Dunn and Tyus Jones, so something would have to give in order to fit Rose into the backcourt.
One option is the Knicks trying to trade for Rubio again, which Begley says is possible.
“Some in the organization were hopeful after the trade deadline that they could revisit their attempts to acquire Rubio from the Minnesota Timberwolves in the offseason, per sources.”
What the Knicks would give Minnesota for Rubio is the unknown, along with how much it’ll cost to sign Rose as a free agent.
Rose averaged 18 points and 4.4 assists with the Knicks last season.
