Who will the Vikings face in the 2016 regular season opener at the yet-to-be-named new stadium?
Vikings vice president Lester Bagley suggested to many media outlets over the weekend that the way the league is structured, it’ll likely be the hated Green Bay Packers.
Back in 2003, when Lambeau Field re-opened after a much-needed renovation, the Vikings were the Packers’ first opponent. So, according to Kevin Seifert (NFC North Blog), the Vikings are expecting the league to return the favor.
Bagley also says groundbreaking of the new stadium should be around the first of October this year, with the actual opening date on July 1, 2016.
Bonus points: Who did the Vikings face in their first regular season home game when the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome opened in 1982?
It wasn’t the Packers, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who played in the NFL Central Division back then. Minnesota was scheduled to play Green Bay in Week 7, but a 57-game players strike wiped that game out.
