Multiple media reports suggest Minnesota Gophers tight end Maxx Williams will declare himself eligible to enter the 2015 NFL draft.
Williams wasn’t willing to discuss his future until after the Gophers Citrus Bowl game in Orlando, Florida, against Missouri on New Year’s Day.
But that didn’t stop 1500 ESPN’s Darren Wolfson from digging up the news Friday night.
“Barring an injury in the Citrus Bowl vs. Missouri, an official announcement is expected soon thereafter.
As a red-shirt sophomore, he’s been in school the required three years.
Williams, along with his family, are already deep in the process of finding an agent. Sources also indicate that they realized the 2015 Draft is not strong for tight ends. The expectation is that Williams can go as high as the late first or second round.”
The report was backed up from another one in the Pioneer Press, citing a person with knowledge of the situation, saying Williams and his family have been leaning towards leaving early since the regular season ended.
Williams, a Waconia native, was a finalist for the John Mackey Award, which is presented to the nation’s top tight end. He was also named as an All American by several different publications.
Williams led the Gophers with 29 catches and 471 yards receiving. He also caught seven touchdown passes. While those numbers may not be eye-popping some of his catches were.
Last week, Williams acknowledged sending his name to the NFL College Advisory committee to see where he might be drafted, if he chose to declare. But when asked, he said he wouldn’t announce his decision until following the game.
If he were to choose to remain at the university, Williams has already been named a captain for 2015.
