The state of Minnesota’s top high school basketball recruit is set to announce his college choice on Friday. DeLaSalle’s Jarvis Johnson will make the announcement at the school Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Multiple media reports indicate Johnson is likely to choose to play for Richard Pitino and the University of Minnesota.
Johnson is a 6-foot-1, play-making guard and is considered a three-star recruit from the nation’s top recruiting services Rivals.com, 247sports.com and ESPN.com.
According to the Pioneer Press, Johnson had narrowed his choices down to the Gophers, UNLV, Wisconsin and Baylor.
The Minneapolis native recently took an official visit to the university, it was his only official visit before announcing his decision.
The Star Tribune’s Amelia Rayno says Johnson dined with players and coaches, but the highlight for Johnson could have been the Minnesota-Middle Tennessee State football game.
“As soon as I walked out of the tunnel, they just started chanting my name,” Johnson told the Star Tribune earlier this week. “It was cool to see though. I really enjoyed that part a lot. It was kind of a surprise moment, but it kind of just made me laugh a little bit.”
After missing out on the “Big Three” last year – Tyus Jones, Rashad Vaughn and Reid Travis – landing Johnson would be a win for the Gophers. He also had offers from several other Big Ten schools including Michigan State, Wisconsin, Maryland and Penn State.
Johnson’s commitment would add to a solid recruiting class for Pitino, which has already been ranked 21st nationally by Rivals.
DeLaSalle sends a release out recently that Jarvis Johnson will announce his college decision 3:30 pm Friday in Casanova Room at his HS.
