The onslaught of players and recruits leaving the University of Minnesota football team in the post-Jerry Kill era is growing.
According to the Pioneer Press and Star Tribune, running back Berkley Edwards, wide receiver Desmond Gant and cornerback Craig James are all leaving the team. Gant and James plan to transfer while Edwards could play at another school or remain at the U of M to run track.
Edwards, a speedster who was highly touted as a high school recruit from Michigan, hasn’t seen much of the field in his two years since redshirting in 2013. He carried the ball just five times as a sophomore this season, and his father, Stan Edwards, doesn’t think the coaching staff was truthful with his son.
“This has nothing to do with playing time,” Stan Edwards, who played six years in the NFL, told the Star Tribune. “This is about what people promised. I told them, ‘If Berkley isn’t playing, I want to know why.’ They told me they would tell me, and they didn’t.”
Notre Dame and Ohio State have been linked to Edwards, the Pioneer Press adds.
Edwards’ older brother, Braylon, also played in the NFL.
The Gophers have seen a handful of recruits decommit since Tracy Claeys took over for Kill and subsequently fired two offensive coaches.
