The Wild could be without Zach Parise when the team opens training camp this week.
Michael Russo of the Athletic.com reported on Wednesday that Parise has tweaked his back – which is not good news for the Minnesota native.
Parise missed the entire 2016 postseason because of a herniated disc in his back. The left wing opted for rehab instead of surgery and was still able to skate in 69 games last season while playing in all five playoff games.
Although the 33-year-old scored just 19 goals a year ago, he’s arguably the heart and soul of the Wild’s roster.
He’s set to make $7.5 million next season and is under contract through 2025.
If Parise isn’t ready for the regular season, it may open the door for young prospects like Luke Kunin or Joel Eriksson-Ek for a larger role with the team.
The Wild report to training camp on Friday and the team’s first preseason game is Sept. 18 against the Winnipeg Jets.
Minnesota is also trying to lock up restricted-free agent Marcus Foligno, who they acquired from the Buffalo Sabres in the Jason Pominville and Marco Scandella trade.
